This ongoing project is located in Yili, Xinjiang, close to the border between NW China and Kazakhstan. Our site lies on a plateau, with the cliff running along the southern and western edge. It overlooks the Yili River on the south.
The two entrances to the complex is located on the NWern and NEern corner of the site boundary. The 1000m horse training track is placed in the north of the site, the two horse stables in the east and the two clubhouses in the SE and South. The two stables are incorporated into the hilly terrain on the eastern edge. The 2 clubhouses are oriented towards the Yili river, where the view is most stunning. Phase I of the clubhouse has its back against a sand dune and is embedded into the ground.
The walls of the two stables is made of locally produced bricks. Each of them have three black burnmarks on the surface, a result of the unique firing process. These marks compose an interesting pattern on the brick walls. The walls supports a row of wooden truss and the roof.
The concept for the clubhouses is to create a platform emerging from the earth to meet the horizon. Stabilised rammed earth walls made of local soil support a wooden framework which is visible from underneath. The wooden structure supports a flat roof covered with soil.
Since the clubhouse is only 1 storey high, complexity of spaces is achieved horizontally through creating an alternation of rooms and courtyards in plan, so one would experience a layering of spaces when walking through the building.
